What Brush & Bulky actually is

City of Tucson Environmental Services runs a free bulky-item collection called Brush & Bulky. The city is divided into 26 residential trash zones, and the program visits each zone roughly twice a year.

It is a genuinely good program. If your pile is modest, your timing is flexible, and you are able to carry everything out front yourself, it costs you nothing and it works. Plenty of households in Tucson never need anything else.

The catch is that it runs on the city's calendar, not yours. Zones rotate, so your two annual windows may or may not fall anywhere near the week you actually need the driveway clear.

The rules that trip people up

The requirements are specific, and a pile that misses them gets left behind. As of August 2026, here is what the city asks for.

Placement. Effective January 1, 2026, piles go at the curb in front of the home. Alley placement is no longer collected except in designated special-pickup areas. This one caught a lot of people out, because alley collection had been the habit for years.

Timing. Set materials out by 6 a.m. on the Monday of your collection week. Crews can come any day that week, so the pile has to be ready at the start and may sit until the end. Do not set out more than two weeks early.

Clearance. Keep materials at least 3 feet from structures, vehicles, mailboxes, walls, and fencing. Do not stack on pavers, and keep piles away from gas and water meters.

Sorting. Brush should be roughly 24 inches in diameter and 5 feet long. Lumber and pipe go under 5 feet and in their own separate piles. Cacti and thorny green waste need to be boxed, with a 25 lb limit per box. Appliance doors have to be removed. Tires are limited to five, in a separate pile of their own.

Volume. Roughly 10 cubic yards per household per event. That is a real amount, but a whole-garage or whole-property job will pass it.

There is also a special on-request collection available for a fee if your timing does not line up with your zone.

Where the city program wins

Cost, obviously. It is free, it is already funded by your service fees, and for a seasonal yard trim or a couple of bulky items it is hard to argue with.

It also wins when you have time. If you are clearing out gradually, you can stage material in the side yard for weeks and move it to the curb the weekend before your window. No appointment, no coordination.

And it wins on simple, uniform loads. A pile of brush that is already the right length, sorted, and sitting at the curb is exactly what the program is built for.

If that is your situation, use it. Genuinely.

Where a crew makes more sense

Three things push a job past what Brush & Bulky is designed to handle.

Timing. A tenant moved out and the unit shows Friday. A closing date is set. A relative's house has to be empty by the end of the month. None of those wait six months for a zone rotation.

Volume. Once you are past roughly 10 cubic yards, you are into multiple collection events or a paid special pickup anyway. A whole garage, a storage unit, or a property cleanout is not a Brush & Bulky job.

Effort. This is the one people underestimate. The city program requires you to get everything to the curb yourself, sorted into compliant piles, and then live with it sitting in front of your house for up to a week. If the sofa is upstairs, or you cannot lift it, or you would rather your front yard not be a staging area, that work does not disappear — it just becomes yours.

A crew comes when you pick, takes items from wherever they sit, and has no pile limits or length rules. Nothing has to go to the curb. Nothing has to be sorted first.
