Tucson Landfills and Transfer Stations: Hours, Fees and Rules

If you have a truck and a free morning, hauling your own load to a landfill or transfer station is the cheapest way to get rid of junk in Tucson. Here is every public option on Pima County's official list, what each one charges residents, and the rules that send people home with a full truck. Everything below was checked against official sources on September 28, 2026. Hours and fees change, so check the facility's own page before you go.

Before you load up

• Cover your load. Los Reales asks for "some form of containment and cover over the load to prevent flying debris" (tarps, blankets and sheets are accepted), and charges $10 more for uncovered loads. The County-contract transfer stations add $25 for an uncovered load.
• Bring a card. Los Reales takes card or Apple Pay; no cash is listed.
• Hazardous waste goes elsewhere. Paint, chemicals, motor oil and batteries don't go in the landfill load. See the household hazardous waste section below.

Los Reales Sustainability Campus (City of Tucson)

5300 E. Los Reales Road, Tucson. Open Monday to Saturday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Sundays, New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Residents can haul their own loads, and the City's pages don't limit this to city residents.

Fees for residents (as of July 2026): $18 for a covered load under 2,000 pounds; $38 a ton for a covered load over 2,000 pounds; $10 more for an uncovered load; a $2 environmental fee on every load; $20 to dispose of each appliance that contains refrigerant; and $5 per tire (passenger tires only, up to 10).

Accepted: green waste, wooden pallets, mattresses, furniture, rugs, concrete and asphalt, and construction debris. Metal appliances and scrap metal go to the recycling area at no charge; the City's recycling page lists a $5 refrigerant evacuation fee for fridges, freezers and AC units brought there, so call 520-791-4183 to confirm which fee applies.

Not accepted: explosives, ammunition, regulated hazardous waste, universal waste, bulk liquids, intact automobiles, lead-acid batteries and waste oil. Friable asbestos and compressed gas cylinders need written approval first from the City's Waste Acceptance Coordinator (520-791-4183).

Site rules: no scavenging, no smoking, and children and pets stay in the vehicle.

Catalina Transfer Station (Pima County)

14425 N. Oracle Road, on Oracle about three miles north of Tangerine Road. Open Monday to Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Sunday. Operated for the County by WM.

Fees for residents (County rates effective January 1, 2025): $27.60 per vehicle under one ton, or $48 a ton, plus $25 for an uncovered load.

Accepted: bagged household waste, green waste, concrete, dirt, rocks, bricks, furniture, carpet and construction debris. Appliances like washers, dryers, water heaters and refrigerators go to scrap metal at residential fees, but refrigerators must have no Freon. Residents also get up to 5 tires a year and household antifreeze, batteries, oil and paint (up to 5 gallons a month) free.

Not accepted: hazardous waste, liquid waste and dead animals.

Sahuarita Transfer Station (Pima County)

16605 S. La Cañada Drive, Sahuarita, one mile south of Sahuarita Road and west of I-19. Open Monday to Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Sunday. Same County residential fees as Catalina.

Accepted: bagged household waste, green waste, construction debris, furniture, carpet, dirt, rocks, concrete and bricks. Refrigerators and other items with Freon go in a designated area, limited to one Freon item per household per year.

Not accepted: hazardous or liquid waste, dead animals, and fencing of any kind.

Ryan Field Transfer Station (Pima County)

6455 S. Continental Road, Tucson, off Ajo Way about a quarter mile west of Ryan Airfield. Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday only, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The residential fee is $13.50 per vehicle. It takes bagged household waste only: no bulky items, no furniture and no construction debris.

Speedway Recycling & Landfill

7301 E. Speedway Blvd. (north on Prudence from Speedway). It's on Pima County's facility list and open to the public. Its posted rates include construction and demolition debris at $36 a ton ($21 minimum), or $21 for an unmodified pickup-truck load; clean green waste from $21; and per-item charges of $20 each for appliances, mattresses, TVs, stuffed furniture and carpet by the roll. Items have to be separated into their designated areas, and tarps should be on when you arrive.

Marana Regional Landfill

14508 W. Avra Valley Road, Marana. Open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m. to noon. It accepts construction and demolition debris, household trash, yard waste and inert materials like concrete, sand and rock. It doesn't take appliances that could release refrigerant, tires, lead-acid batteries or used oil. Its operator doesn't post whether residents can drop off their own loads on an ordinary day, or at what price, so call before you drive out.

Sites that aren't options for most people

• Tangerine Landfill isn't on Pima County's list of active landfills and transfer stations, so it's not a public disposal option.
• Rincon Recycling & Transfer Station (5890 S. Mann Ave.) is not open to the public; it serves account customers only.
• Drexel Land Reclamation Facility (11330 E. Drexel Road) is on the County's list, but we couldn't find its hours, fees or public-access rules from an official source. Call before going.
• Ajo Landfill is on the County list too, but it's in Ajo, far west of Tucson.

Household hazardous waste

Paint, solvents, pool chemicals, motor oil and the like go to the City of Tucson's Household Hazardous Waste drop-off at the Los Reales campus: Thursday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., closed the second Saturday of the month except in summer. It's free for City of Tucson residents with proof of residency, and $15 for residents of Marana, Oro Valley, Sahuarita and unincorporated Pima County. The remaining 2026 community collection events are October 10, November 14 and December 12.

When a crew is the better deal

Self-hauling makes sense when you have a truck, a strong back and a load that fits one trip. It stops making sense when the job means several trips, a rented trailer, per-item fees on mattresses and appliances, and a morning spent at the scale.
