Junk Removal vs. Dumpster Rental vs. DIY in Tucson

There are three ways to get a pile of junk out of your life in Tucson: haul it yourself, rent a dumpster and fill it, or hire a crew to load and haul it. Each one is the right answer for some jobs. Here's how they compare, using Tucson's actual disposal rules and fees, checked on September 28, 2026.

Option 1: Haul it yourself

How it works: you load a truck or trailer, cover the load, and drive it to a landfill or transfer station.

What it costs: the disposal fee plus your time and vehicle. At the City of Tucson's Los Reales campus, a covered load under 2,000 pounds costs $18, plus a $2 environmental fee, $10 more if it isn't covered, and $20 to dispose of each appliance with refrigerant. Pima County's Catalina and Sahuarita transfer stations charge $27.60 per vehicle under a ton.

Free options first: City of Tucson residents get Brush & Bulky, a free curbside collection twice a year, up to about 10 cubic yards, with strict sorting rules. Donation centers will take items in good condition.

Option 2: Rent a dumpster

How it works: a roll-off container is dropped in your driveway for a rental period. You fill it, and the company hauls it away when you're done.

What to watch for:

• You still do all the lifting and loading yourself, including carrying things out of the house.
• It takes up the driveway for the whole rental period.
• Companies restrict what can go in. Ask about mattresses, appliances, tires, concrete and hazardous materials before you book, because the rules and weight limits vary.

Best for: long projects where debris comes out steadily over days or weeks, like a remodel you're doing yourself.

Option 3: Hire a junk removal crew

How it works: you point at what's going; a crew carries it out from wherever it sits, loads the truck, sweeps up and leaves. Nothing has to be staged at the curb or sorted first.

How to decide

Ask three questions. Can you lift and carry everything yourself? Does the debris come out over weeks, or all at once? Is there a deadline?

If you can do the lifting and it's a one-trip load, haul it yourself. If the debris comes out slowly over a long project, a dumpster fits.
